I guess I started composing music around the same time I started recording music. The two have always been connected for me. When I compose I listen to sound and add something to it or take away something from it. I'm molding, shaping, changing, organizing. Bouncing off of the relations I hear between the sounds. A lot of the time it's a process in which I listen to something that is either in my mind as a memory of something I've experienced. It can also be something imagined. Then I react to that and record that reaction. It changes though. I recognize the change. I look for it. The change is there waiting, inside. It guides me. When I find it inside something I'm working on I'm relieved. That's when I know I'm onto something. A lot of it is based on previous experience and some of it is intuition. It's like focusing in and isolating a muscle in your arm and realizing that only a certain magnitude of force combined w/ a relaxed grip will hold that special something brittle without crushing it.
